Hydrogen Peroxide 35% vs 50%: Grades, Industrial Uses and Safe Storage
How to pick the right strength, read the specification and store it safely
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is one of the most widely used industrial oxidants, and one of the cleanest: it breaks down into water and oxygen. It is sold by strength, usually 35%, 50% or 60% w/w. Picking the right strength, and handling it correctly, saves money and prevents accidents.
35%, 50% and 60%: what changes
| 35% w/w | 50% w/w | 60% w/w | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active H₂O₂ per 1,000 kg | 350 kg | 500 kg | 600 kg |
| Typical buyers | Textiles, water treatment, general industry | Pulp and paper, chemical synthesis, large users | Specialised high-volume users |
| Usual supply | Carboys, drums, tankers | Carboys, drums, tankers | Mainly tankers |
| Handling | Strong oxidiser | Stronger oxidiser, more care | Strongest; trained handling only |
Compare prices on active content. One tonne of 50% contains as much H₂O₂ as about 1.43 tonnes of 35%. Higher strength means less water to transport and store, but more care in handling.
Where hydrogen peroxide is used
- Textiles: bleaching cotton and blends before dyeing.
- Pulp and paper: bleaching mechanical and chemical pulp, and de-inking recycled fibre.
- Chemical synthesis: making peracetic acid, other peroxygens and many organic intermediates.
- Water and wastewater: odour and hydrogen sulphide control, COD reduction and advanced oxidation.
- Mining: destroying cyanide in gold-processing effluents.
- Food packaging and healthcare: sterilising aseptic packaging and as a disinfectant, using dedicated food or pharmaceutical grades.
The specifications that matter
Commercial hydrogen peroxide is stabilised so it does not decompose in storage. Beyond the strength (assay), a good certificate reports:
- Stability: oxygen released when a sample is heated (for example at 100 °C for a fixed time). Lower means a more stable product.
- Acidity (as H₂SO₄): hydrogen peroxide is kept slightly acidic to keep it stable.
- Iron and copper: even traces of these metals speed up decomposition. A typical Indian producer specification allows only about 1 ppm iron and 0.1 ppm copper.
- Non-volatile residue: dissolved solids left after evaporation.
BIS rules in India
Under the Hydrogen Peroxide (Quality Control) Order, 2022, stabilised hydrogen peroxide sold in India must conform to IS 2080:2021 and carry the BIS Standard Mark under a BIS licence. Product meant for export is outside the scope of the Order. When you buy for domestic use, ask for the BIS licence details along with the COA.
Safe storage
- Keep it in its original vented container, closed, upright and out of direct sunlight, in a cool, well-ventilated area.
- Never return unused product to the original container. Contamination with dust, rust or metal can start decomposition, which releases oxygen and heat.
- Keep away from combustibles, organic materials, reducing agents and metals such as copper, brass and iron.
- Use compatible materials: suitable HDPE or passivated stainless steel for containers and transfer lines.
- When diluting, add peroxide to water, never the other way round, and wear goggles, face shield and gloves.
- Spills: dilute with plenty of water and keep spilled liquid away from combustible material.
Transport classification
- 20% to 60%: UN 2014, Class 5.1 (oxidiser) with a Class 8 (corrosive) subsidiary risk, packing group II. This covers the 35%, 50% and 60% grades.
- Above 60%: UN 2015, packing group I.
- By air, solutions above 40% are not accepted. For sea freight, check the shipping line's current rules, as some accept these cargoes only in ISO tanks.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, 35% or 50% hydrogen peroxide?
Neither is better in itself. 35% is easier and safer to handle for most plants; 50% saves freight and storage for large users who can handle it. Compare on price per kilogram of H₂O₂.
How long does hydrogen peroxide last?
Well-stabilised peroxide in its original vented container, stored cool and away from contamination, loses strength only slowly. Ask for the manufacturer's shelf-life guidance and use stock in rotation.
Can hydrogen peroxide be stored in a steel drum?
Not in ordinary mild steel, which causes decomposition. Use suitable HDPE or passivated stainless-steel containers.
Is BIS certification required for hydrogen peroxide in India?
Yes, for stabilised hydrogen peroxide sold in India, under the 2022 Quality Control Order (IS 2080:2021). Export consignments are excluded.
