Overview

Colour, opacity and protection

Pigments are fine solids that stay undissolved in the paint, ink, plastic or concrete they colour, while dyes and optical brighteners dissolve into the material. The range covers both. Organic pigments such as beta blue (Pigment Blue 15:3), Pigment Green 7, Pigment Violet 23 and Rubine Toner (Pigment Red 57:1) give bright, strong shades, and ready pigment pastes tint emulsions, enamels and putty without grinding.

Inorganic pigments bring hiding power and durability: rutile and anatase titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, lithopone and Blanc Fixe for whites; synthetic and natural iron oxides for red, yellow, brown and black primers, pavers and tiles; Prussian and ultramarine blues; and lead chrome pigments for permitted industrial uses only. Zinc phosphate, zinc dust and micaceous iron oxide protect steel in primers.

Leafing and non-leafing aluminium pastes and gold bronze powders give metallic finishes, and Altiris infrared-reflecting TiO₂ helps roofs and plastic parts stay cooler. Lithionyx confirms the C.I. name, grade and make against your formulation before quoting, with material from makers including Venator, Sun Chemical, Meghmani and Silox India.

Dyes & Optical Brighteners

Optical brighteners absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as blue light, so whites look whiter. Optical Brightener OB and the heat-stable OB-1, OB-1E and PCPR grades whiten PVC, polyolefins, polyester fibre, masterbatch, coatings and inks, while water-soluble CBS-X is made for detergent powders, bars and liquids. Choose by processing temperature and whether the medium is a polymer or water.

Lead and chromate pigments by rule

Lead chromes, zinc chrome and red lead are supplied only for permitted industrial uses, never for household or decorative paints, which Indian rules limit to 90 ppm lead. The buyer confirms the end use before supply.

    COA, SDS and suitable packing

Every batch ships with the manufacturer's COA and SDS, with TDS and samples on request. Powders typically come in 25 kg bags, and pastes and solvent-borne aluminium pastes in sealed drums labelled to rule.

FAQ

Pigments & Colourants: questions buyers ask

Can't find your answer? Our team replies with the grade, documents and lead time for your requirement.

What is the difference between rutile and anatase titanium dioxide?

Both are titanium dioxide (Pigment White 6) in different crystal forms. Rutile has the higher refractive index, about 2.7 against roughly 2.5 for anatase, so it gives more hiding power, and it is less photoactive, so it is chosen for exterior paints, plastics and durable coatings. Anatase is softer and slightly bluer-white; it suits interior paints, paper, ceramics and delustering of synthetic fibres, where long outdoor exposure is not needed.

What is the difference between alpha blue and beta blue phthalocyanine pigment?

Both are copper phthalocyanine blue (C.I. 74160) in different crystal forms. Alpha blue (Pigment Blue 15, 15:1, 15:2) is the warmer, red-shade blue; unstabilised alpha can shift to the greener beta form with heat or aromatic solvents, so stabilised 15:1 grades are used in solvent paints. Beta blue (Pigment Blue 15:3, 15:4) is the stable green-shade blue and the standard process cyan of printing inks; 15:4 grades resist flocculation in paints.

Can lead chrome pigments be used in decorative paints in India?

No. India's Regulation of Lead Contents in Household and Decorative Paints Rules, 2016 cap lead at 90 ppm, which rules out lemon, middle and primrose chrome (Pigment Yellow 34), scarlet chrome (Pigment Red 104) and red lead in those paints. These pigments are supplied only for permitted industrial uses, with the buyer confirming the end use. Lead-free routes include organic yellows, mixed metal oxides and zinc phosphate primers.

Which pigments are used to colour cement, paver blocks and tiles?

Iron oxides are the standard choice because they are lightfast and stable in the strong alkali of cement and lime: red (Pigment Red 101), yellow (Pigment Yellow 42), black and blended browns and oranges, typically dosed at 1–5% of cement weight. Phthalocyanine green and blue, ultramarine and mixed metal oxides add other shades. Prussian blue is unsuitable, because alkali breaks it down.

What is the difference between leafing and non-leafing aluminium paste?

In leafing paste the aluminium flakes are coated with stearic acid, so they float to the surface and overlap into a bright, mirror-like silver layer that reflects heat and resists moisture; it suits heat-resistant, roof and tank paints and is not normally overcoated. Non-leafing flakes stay spread through the film, giving a metallic sparkle that can be tinted or clear-coated, as in automotive, two-wheeler and hammer-tone finishes.

What should I share when enquiring for a pigment or pigment paste?

Share the C.I. name (for example Pigment Blue 15:3) or the brand and grade you use now, your end use and system (water-based, solvent-based, plastic or cement), a shade standard, any heat, light or bleed requirement, and the quantity. We confirm grade and make before quoting, send samples on request for your own trial, and ship the manufacturer's COA and SDS with every batch.

Need a grade or make that isn't listed?

Send the product name, CAS number, quantity and delivery location. We confirm the specification and make before we quote, and source through established Indian and global producers.
