Overview

Protecting polymers from process to product

Polymers degrade under processing heat and shear and in years of sunlight; additives slow that damage and help the melt process cleanly. For PVC, Galata Chemicals methyl, butyl and reverse-ester tin stabilisers and lead-free Ca-Zn one-packs control heat degradation in pipes, profiles, clear sheet and cables. Rianlon Rianox phenolic and phosphite antioxidants protect polyolefins, nylon and ABS during extrusion and in service, while Riasorb UV absorbers and HALS guard films, tapes, fibres and mouldings outdoors.

Blendex acrylic impact modifiers and processing aids, Formosa MBS and CPE 135A add toughness and melt strength to rigid PVC, and Epigral CPVC resin is compounded into hot and cold water pipes. Polyethylene and Fischer-Tropsch waxes and zinc stearate lubricate the melt, and DOP and ESBO plasticise flexible PVC. Masterbatch and film makers also get wetting and dispersing agents, slip, antistatic and flow additives. Lithionyx confirms each grade code and make against your formulation before quoting.

FAQ

Plastics & Rubber Additives: questions buyers ask

Can't find your answer? Our team replies with the grade, documents and lead time for your requirement.

Should I use a tin stabiliser or a calcium-zinc stabiliser for PVC?

Organotin mercaptides (methyl, butyl and reverse-ester tin) are very efficient at low dosage and give excellent early colour and clarity, so they suit rigid pipe, fittings, clear sheet and bottles. Calcium-zinc stabilisers are lead-free, low-odour one-pack systems that usually combine stabiliser, co-stabilisers and lubricants, and they cover pipes, profiles, cables and flexible compounds. The right choice depends on the product, the process and the clarity required.

What is the difference between primary and secondary antioxidants?

Primary antioxidants, usually hindered phenols such as Rianox 1010 and 1076, trap free radicals and give long-term heat stability. Secondary antioxidants, usually phosphites such as Rianox 168, break down hydroperoxides and protect the polymer during high-temperature processing. The two work synergistically, which is why ready phosphite and phenolic blends of the B-215 type are widely used in polyolefins.

When should I use a UV absorber and when a HALS?

UV absorbers such as benzotriazoles (Riasorb UV-P, 326, 328) and benzophenones (UV-531) absorb UV light and release it as heat. Because they need path length, they work best in thicker parts, clear plastics and coatings. HALS such as UV-770, 622 and 944 do not absorb UV but trap the radicals it creates and are regenerated, so they suit thin films, tapes and fibres. Many outdoor products combine both.

Which impact modifier suits rigid PVC: acrylic, MBS or CPE?

Acrylic impact modifiers contain no butadiene, so they keep impact strength outdoors and are the usual choice for window profiles, pipe and siding. MBS gives high clarity and impact strength, but its butadiene rubber degrades in sunlight, so it suits clear indoor sheet, film and bottles. CPE is a chlorinated polyethylene elastomer used as an impact modifier in pipes and profiles, and in cable and hose compounds.

What are DOP and ESBO used for in PVC compounds?

DOP (DEHP) is a general-purpose primary plasticiser that makes PVC flexible for cables, film, leather cloth and hose. ESBO is a secondary plasticiser whose epoxy groups also mop up hydrogen chloride, so it acts as a heat co-stabiliser with Ca-Zn systems in film, gaskets and cables. DEHP is restricted in toys, childcare articles and many consumer products in the EU, so check the rules for your end use and market.

Can I trial a new stabiliser or antioxidant grade before switching?

Yes. Share your polymer, product, current grade and processing conditions, and we confirm a matching grade code and make, such as a Galata Ca-Zn one-pack or a Rianlon antioxidant, then arrange a sample or trial quantity with its TDS, COA and SDS. Orders can then run from single bags up to full truck loads, with packaging and lead time confirmed in the quotation.

Need a grade or make that isn't listed?

Send the product name, CAS number, quantity and delivery location. We confirm the specification and make before we quote, and source through established Indian and global producers.
